Die Fotos entstanden während einer Reise auf die Insel Sansibar im März 2023. Der Ort Pwani Mchangani an der Ostküste der Insel ist bekannt für seine Seegrasplantagen. Sansibar ist ein weltweiter Hotspot für die Biodiversität von Seegras. Gesunde Seegras-Ökosysteme spielen eine entscheidende Rolle für den Lebensunterhalt der lokalen Bevölkerung. Während zur Ebbe das Wasser zurückgeht, wird das Seegras ausschließlich von Frauen geerntet und zum Trocknen an den Strand gebracht. Sie sind somit Gärtnerinnen der besonderen Art. Neben dem Tourismus und den Gewürznelken ist Seegras der drittgrößte wirtschaftliche Zweig.
The photos were taken during a trip to the island of Zanzibar in March 2023. The town of Pwani Mchangani on the east coast of the island is known for its seaweed plantations. Zanzibar is a global hotspot for seagrass biodiversity. Healthy seagrass ecosystems play a vital role in the livelihoods of local people. As the water recedes at low tide, the seaweed is harvested exclusively by women and taken to the beach to dry. They are therefore gardeners of a special kind. In addition to tourism and cloves, seaweed is the third largest economic sector.
